Edge is a platform based on Web3. Edge networking is a computing platform that runs on the spare capacity that can be found worldwide. It is a kind of decentralized cloud service. According to the website, anyone can contribute to the Edge platform and yield benefits. The platform claims to be environmentally friendly because it is built using the spare capacity of the devices that are already in the home and office. The platform facilitates content delivery by transforming and optimizing the media library with simple URL parameters. The platform also provides file storage and sharing facility.
According to the documents of the platform, Edge is a peer-to-peer network of blockchain that provides high-performance decentralized web services. The platform was earlier called DADI, which stands for Decentralized Architecture for a Democratic Internet, which was later renamed Edge.
The platform claims that centralized authorities control the internet, and users and consumers do not have total freedom there. Only a handful of global corporations control the network. The platform aims to reverse this relationship and give the network ownership to everyone connected to it. The platform further intends to provide the benefit of the revenue that comes from its use to the consumers only.
The platform has two native tokens, namely XE and EDGE. The EDGE token is a utility token that works on the ERC-20 Ethereum blockchain. The EDGE token is used for trading and exchanging with other coins, and for purchasing services on the Edge platform and mining. The XE is an internal coin of the Edge platform. XE is used for staking, governance, and adding value to the nodes. XE is used for fast transactions on the platform and is mapped on a 1:1 ratio with EDGE token.
The Edge platform was founded in 2013 and was renamed in July 2019. The initial coin offering (ICO) was held in 2018 and raised $29 million at an ICO price of $0.5 per token. The founding team behind the platform includes Joseph Denne, Chris Mair, and Will Lebens.
