Investment Risk

Baseline risk

All crypto-assets are risky, regardless of the type of token you hold. Here are some ‘baseline’ risks to be aware of before deciding to invest.

Investment risk: The performance of most crypto-assets can be highly volatile, with their value dropping as quickly as it can rise. You should be prepared to lose all the money you invest in crypto-assets.

Lack of protections: Crypto-assets are largely unregulated and neither the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) nor the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) will protect you in the event something goes wrong with your crypto-asset investments.

Crypto-assets are complex: It may be difficult to understand the risks associated with a crypto-asset investment. Do your own research and if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket: Putting all your money into a single type of investment is risky. Spreading your money across different investments makes you less dependent on any one to do well. A good rule of thumb is not to invest more than 10% of your money in high-risk investments such as crypto-assets.

Defi tokens

Decentralised Finance (or ‘DeFi’) tokens (e.g. , ) are crypto-assets linked to financial applications and protocols built on decentralised blockchain technology.

Smart contract risk: DeFi relies heavily on smart contracts. Even a minor coding error or oversight can lead to a contract being exploited, potentially resulting in significant losses for DeFi tokens.

Regulatory risk: DeFi operates in a decentralized manner, often without intermediaries or financial crime controls. Regulatory bodies across jurisdictions might introduce new regulations impacting the use, value, or legality of certain DeFi protocols or assets.

For example, the Perpetual Protocol (PERP) and Quickstop (QUICK) protocols may be accessible in jurisdictions where some or all the available activity may need to be regulated now or in the future. If a regulator deemed the activity to be in breach of regulation, this could seriously impact token value.

Rug-pulls / Exit scams: Some DeFi projects might be launched by anonymous or pseudonymous teams, increasing the risk of "rug pulls" where developers abandon the project and withdraw funds, leaving investors with worthless tokens.

Data/oracle risk: DeFi protocols often rely on external data sources or ‘oracles’. Manipulation or inaccuracies in these data sources can lead to unintended financial outcomes within the protocols.

Protocol complexity: The complexity of some DeFi protocols can make it difficult for average users to fully understand the mechanisms and associated risks.

About Enzyme

MLN is an Ethereum token that powers Enzyme (formerly known as Melon Protocol), a protocol that aims to facilitate on-chain asset management for the DeFi ecosystem. MLN allows users to build, share, and explore DeFi investment strategies (called “vaults”) while filtering by historical performance and risk profiles. MLN is used to pay for various functions throughout the vault creation process and investment lifecycle.

Enzyme, powered by the MLN token, is a digital asset management platform that strives to streamline the management of digital assets. It provides a unified, on-chain system that allows access to digital assets and DeFi from a single application. Enzyme aims to reduce operational risks associated with managing crypto and DeFi assets without purpose-built smart-contract permissions and controls. It provides a robust suite of programmable risk management and governance tools to protect assets. Enzyme also maintains sophisticated on-chain data pipelines, ensuring data is auditable and trustworthy, promoting a future based on transparency and auditability.

Enzyme operates through a system of vaults, each representing a unique portfolio with its own strategy, asset allocation, and investment goals. Users can create multiple vaults and customize each one according to their preferences. Enzyme provides tools for managing and monitoring these portfolios, including performance metrics and detailed reporting. Users can track the performance of their assets and make informed decisions about how to manage their portfolios over time. Enzyme also provides real-time reporting and performance dashboards with key performance and risk metrics, and reports that provide provable data on all transactions at any point in history.

Enzyme has a wide range of potential use cases. For instance, it can be used for treasury management, allowing organizations to manage their treasury transparently. It can also be used to set up an on-chain DeFi fund, with Enzyme taking care of all fund operations and administration using smart-contract automation. Additionally, users can build their own indexes in minutes and have them rebalance automatically on-chain or off-chain. Enzyme also allows anyone to build, scale, and monetize investment strategies using the protocol's non-custodial Vaults. These strategies can span the spectrum from traditional discretionary allocators to DeFi-native combinations of any of the primitives with which Enzyme integrates.

Enzyme, formerly known as the Melon Protocol, was initially developed by the private company Melonport. After the dissolution of Melonport, the protocol was transferred to the Enzyme Council. The protocol has been on the mainnet since February 2019 and was the first DeFi protocol to decentralize its governance. Enzyme v2, a completely re-architected protocol with modularity and extensibility at the core of its design, was launched to the mainnet in January 2021. The Enzyme token, MLN, is used to access the MLN network and incentivize developers to build on Enzyme.
