About Kaspa
Kaspa (KAS) is a proof-of-work (PoW) cryptocurrency that implements the GHOSTDAG protocol. Unlike traditional blockchains, GHOSTDAG does not orphan blocks created in parallel, but allows them to coexist and orders them in consensus. This makes Kaspa a blockDAG, a generalization of Nakamoto consensus. This unique approach allows for secure operation while maintaining high block rates and minimal confirmation times. Kaspa is a community project, completely open source, with no central governance. It was envisioned by R&D company DAGLabs and its founder, Yonatan Sompolinsky, a Postdoc CS at Harvard University on the MEV Research Team.
Kaspa operates on a unique monetary policy which decreases emissions geometrically over time based on the 12-note scale of music, known as the chromatic phase. This policy dictates how many coins are minted per second regardless of the block rate. If Kaspa changes the block rate in the future, the reward will be adjusted accordingly to maintain the same emission rate. Kaspa's network is secured by miners through Proof of Work and uses an algorithm known as k-Heavyhash. This algorithm was chosen for forward-compatibility with Photonic miners when they become available.
Kaspa aims to support high block rates while maintaining the level of security offered by proof-of-work environments. Its current main net operates at 1 block per second, with future plans to increase this capability. This makes Kaspa suitable for applications that require fast transaction times and high throughput. Additionally, Kaspa's unique monetary policy, which decreases emissions geometrically over time, could potentially make it an interesting option for those interested in the economic aspects of cryptocurrencies.
Kaspa was envisioned by R&D company DAGLabs, through investment by PolyChain. The founder is Yonatan Sompolinsky, a Postdoc CS at Harvard University on the MEV Research Team. Yonatan's 2013 paper on Ghost protocol is cited in the Ethereum Whitepaper. Kaspa core developers and contributors include Cryptography Doctoral student Shai Wyborski, CS Master Michael Sutton, Mike Zak CS Undergrad Studies, Cryptography researcher Elichai Turkel, and Developer Ori Newman. As of June 2022, there are around 8.5 billion KAS in circulation.
How Kaspa and Real differ
Kaspa (KAS) and the Brazilian Real (BRL) are two distinct forms of currency, each with their unique characteristics. Kaspa is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that implements the GHOSTDAG protocol, allowing for high block rates and minimal confirmation times. It operates on a unique monetary policy, the chromatic phase, which decreases emissions geometrically over time. This policy dictates the number of coins minted per second, regardless of the block rate. Kaspa's network is secured by miners through Proof of Work and uses an algorithm known as k-Heavyhash. On the other hand, the Brazilian Real is a traditional fiat currency, regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil, and its value is determined by market forces of supply and demand. Unlike Kaspa, which aims to support high block rates while maintaining the level of security offered by proof-of-work environments, the Brazilian Real does not rely on blockchain technology or cryptographic security. Furthermore, while Kaspa's supply is algorithmically controlled, the supply of Brazilian Real can be influenced by the Central Bank's monetary policy decisions.
