About IOTA

IOTA is designed to facilitate microtransactions between devices on the Internet of Things (IoT). IOTA uses a unique consensus algorithm (called the Tangle) that requires users to validate two transactions in order to make a transaction of their own.

IOTA is a unique distributed ledger technology (DLT) that operates on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) known as the Tangle. This innovative architecture allows for the parallel processing of transactions, overcoming the common bottlenecks found in standard blockchain architectures. IOTA aims to establish a secure and permissionless infrastructure for the future economy, enabling the development of decentralized applications through automated trust. It offers tools for creating and managing custom Layer 2 chains, deploying smart contracts, minting native tokens and NFTs, and introducing digital identities to users. IOTA is also set to undergo a protocol upgrade in 2024, known as IOTA 2.0, which intends to deliver full decentralization.

IOTA operates on the Tangle, a directed acyclic graph (DAG), which facilitates the processing of transactions in parallel. This unique capacity of the Tangle to support simultaneous additions of blocks, coupled with its DAG architecture, enables continuous and parallel transaction processing. This optimization of computational resources is essential for handling high volumes of transactions. IOTA operates without the need for external validators or miners, removing the necessity for transaction fees based on tokens. This strategy ensures that transactions on the IOTA platform are not only cost-effective but also safeguarded against possible manipulation, promoting smooth and secure transaction transfers.

IOTA seeks to connect the physical and digital worlds, making illiquid assets liquid and widely tradable, to enable new economic opportunities. It aims to provide solutions for establishing a secure and permissionless infrastructure that can drive the economy of the future. IOTA enables the development of decentralized applications through automated trust in the form of Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, an advanced consensus algorithm, and thoughtfully balanced incentives. It delivers tools for creating and managing custom Layer 2 chains, deploying smart contracts, minting native tokens and NFTs with distinctive features, and introducing digital identities to users.

The IOTA Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization headquartered in Berlin, Germany, was founded in 2017, making it one of the longest-standing crypto projects. The foundation develops the IOTA protocol and steers open-source governance to bring the technology to production maturity. Its Co-founder and Chairman is Dominik Schiener. The IOTA Foundation is currently working on developing infrastructure to represent real-world assets in digital tokens. Two organizations, the Tangle Ecosystem Association (TEA) and the IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation, help drive the adoption of IOTA and grow the ecosystem of partners and builders using the technology.

How IOTA and Real differ

IOTA and the Brazilian Real (BRL) are two distinct forms of currency, each with its unique characteristics and uses. IOTA is a distributed ledger technology that operates on a directed acyclic graph known as the Tangle, which allows for parallel processing of transactions, overcoming the common bottlenecks found in standard blockchain architectures. It aims to establish a secure and permissionless infrastructure for the future economy, enabling the development of decentralized applications through automated trust. On the other hand, the Brazilian Real is the official currency of Brazil, regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil, and is used for all traditional financial transactions within the country. Unlike IOTA, the Brazilian Real is a physical currency, subject to inflation and monetary policy decisions by the Brazilian government. While IOTA seeks to connect the physical and digital worlds, making illiquid assets liquid and widely tradable, the Brazilian Real serves as a standard medium of exchange, store of value, and unit of account within Brazil.
